Friesestraatweg

Friesestraatweg 145

In the north of The Netherlands, in the city of Groningen, a new building has emerged from the ground. Quite literally…. Mass, built out of bricks baked from farmland from the area, ensures optimum use of local resources. In addition, a groundsource heat pump has been installed to heat the entire building.

The building is a barrier and a funnel in one. We treat the shape in such a way that it lets light in, but keeps the sound out. At street level, we open up the courtyard and connect to urban structures on a larger scale. These connections in turn help to shape the neighbourhood. The selectiveness of external influences produces a building that blurs with its context. It belongs here and nowhere else, like a custom made tailored suit.
