Steenwijklaan The Hague: timber construction from vision to reality
A significant step toward realization has been taken at Steenwijklaan in The Hague. On April 21, the development agreement was signed for a new timber construction project featuring 63 homes: social and mid-market rental studios and apartments. The project will also include two community spaces to strengthen the neighborhood.
The project demonstrates how timber construction, biobased building and urban densification can work together to contribute to affordable, healthy, and future-proof housing. As a timber architect , Urban Climate Architects creates buildings that emit less CO₂, offer a pleasant indoor climate, and can adapt to changing housing needs.
The design of Steenwijklaan is based on the Open Building principle: flexible, future-oriented, and designed for change. With nature-inclusive interventions, green outdoor space, and careful integration into the Morgenstond district, this project is more than just a residential building. It is a place for quality of life, connection, and community value.
For clients working on CLT construction in the Netherlands and sustainable housing, this project offers valuable inspiration. Together with Hof Wonen, Dura Vermeer Bouw en Vastgoed Rotterdam, Bureau Kroner Architecten, the Municipality of The Hague, and partners such as DGMR, VKP, and Adviesbureau Lüning, Urban Climate Architects is continuing to develop this plan. Even within a sustainable architectural tender , Steenwijklaan demonstrates how sustainability ambitions can result in a feasible and social project.
