Research as the basis for future-ready construction

The building challenge is changing fast. Housing demand, climate targets, material scarcity and urban densification all call for new ways of designing and building. For UCA, sustainable architecture and procurement therefore starts not only with design, but with research.

We explore how mass timber architecture, Cross Laminated Timber CLT, renewable materials and circular building strategies can contribute to buildings with a lower environmental impact. We look not only at material use, but also at construction time, demountability, comfort, lifespan and urban quality.

Our research forms the basis for projects where Paris Proof architecture, circular construction and climate-adaptive design come together.

From handbook to practice

A key example is the Handbook for Dutch Mass Timber in Detail. This handbook makes technical knowledge about mass timber construction accessible to clients, design teams and construction partners. It shows that timber is not simply a material choice, but a different way of thinking: lighter, smarter and more future-focused.

Our research into Circular-CLT as a circular building material, developed in collaboration with TNO, also shows how innovation can contribute to better building methods. By testing, developing and sharing knowledge, we create a strong foundation for projects that go beyond standard solutions.

For us, research is not a separate archive. It is a workshop for practice — and a direct basis for clients looking for a CLT architect in the Netherlands with expertise in design, delivery and material innovation.

Biobased construction as the logical next step

Biobased construction plays an increasingly important role in our research and design practice. While timber construction often starts with the structure, biobased construction extends that thinking to insulation, façades, finishes and material sourcing.

Materials such as timber, hemp, flax, straw and wood fibre come from renewable sources and can store CO₂ rather than only emit it. This responds to the urgent need for buildings with lower embodied carbon and healthier material cycles.

For UCA, biobased construction is not a trend, but a necessary step towards circular construction in the Netherlands, sustainable material choices and architecture that works within the limits of climate and city.
