The Smeg: Uptake and Transformation on the Damsterdiep
Architecture that connects city and water
At a unique location in Groningen, where water and the city come together, The Skeg—is an architectural statement that marks the entrance to the city. This innovative project shows how summits, transformation and renovation can contribute to urban development.
Vertical extension as smart urban development
The Skeg adds an extra floor above the parking garage on the Damsterdiep, a perfect example of vertical extension as a sustainable solution for urban densification. Instead of taking up new space, it uses existing structures to create additional housing in the heart of the city.
Renovation and transformation in balance
The design literally cuts through the layers of the city and forms a powerful connection between past and present. On the left is the historic Damsterdiep, once an important waterway, and on the right, the Nieuweweg leads to the former Poele Gate, an old gateway to the city center. The Skeg's sharp lines embrace this historical context while adding a contemporary layer.
Architecture that keeps moving
The combination of angled edges and strategically placed openings creates a dynamic play of light and shadow. This ensures that The Skeg shows a different face at any time of the day and blends perfectly into its surroundings.
