Transformation of a Brutalist Building into a Sustainable Shopping Center

Urban Climate Architects has a unique transformation realized from a brutalist building from the sixties into a future-proof shopping center. Where a “concrete temple” once stood, there is now room for encounter, movement and sustainability — without losing the character of the original design.

Architectural Transformation: From Machine to Human Size

The original building, a textbook example of post-war efficiency and brutalist architecture, formed the basis of this redevelopment. The transformation focused around the entrance area, where we introduced new accents with steel. This modern material provides a powerful contrast to the concrete and restores the balance in the design, while retaining most of the rest of the structure.

Innovative and Respectful Design

The approach respects the historic essence of the building, but adds a contemporary look. Using steel as a visual anchor point in the entrance creates a new dialogue between old and new. This transformation shows how conservation and innovation can go hand in hand harmoniously in a commercial program.

Sustainability at the heart of the transformation

In addition to aesthetics, sustainability played a central role. The shopping center now has a green roof that contributes to a healthy indoor climate and biodiversity. The redevelopment goes beyond appearances: with the reuse of materials and energy-efficient solutions, the building meets the requirements of the future.

A New Identity, Same Soul

At home transformation shows how the soul of a building can be preserved while completely renewing its function and appearance. Urban Climate Architects shows how architectural heritage gets a second life — sustainable, functional and ready for the future.
