CLT homes between Delft's historic fruit gardens
A special residential landscape is being created on the Sint Jorisweg in Delft. In the middle of the greenery of old fruit gardens and a characteristic indelaan, we are building 14 sustainable homes. A place where sustainable and biobased construction is not only visible, but also tangible in daily life.
As a timber architect, we do not design separate houses here, but a coherent whole where nature, architecture and health reinforce each other. This project shows how timber construction contributes to a future-proof city, even at a small level.
Living on the border between city and nature
The strength of Sint Jorisweg lies in its unique location. Hidden between existing trees and gardens, a quiet living environment is created, within walking distance of the historic center of Delft.
The plan is strongly intertwined with the landscape:
- green roofs that cool and buffer rainwater
- informal paths between trees and gardens
- preservation of existing landscape elements
- gentle transitions between private and collective green
Cars play a minor role, giving the landscape space. This creates a living environment where rest and encounter naturally come together.
CLT as a basis for future-proof construction
The houses are built in solid wood construction and HSB: an efficient and sustainable building system that contributes to circular and climate-aware construction.
Building with solid wood means:
- storage of CO₂ instead of emissions
- a lower environmental impact than traditional construction methods
- a healthy and natural indoor climate
- fast and silent construction processes with minimal impact
With this form of wood construction, we show that sustainability and sophisticated living quality can go hand in hand.
Nature-inclusive design from the start
At Sint Jorisweg, nature including construction is the starting point, not the addition afterwards.
The houses actively contribute to biodiversity:
- nesting facilities for birds
- habitats for bats
- green facades with climbing plants
- biodiverse plants around the houses
This creates a living environment where people and nature live together in balance.
Architecture that reinforces the place
The architecture fits seamlessly with the environment. Warm brick facades, partly made of recycled and circular materials, give the whole thing a timeless look.
Large windows provide plenty of daylight and strengthen the relationship between inside and outside. Wooden frames and natural materials contribute to a sense of peace and security.
We design buildings that not only exude quality when completed, but actually become more beautiful over time.
Healthy living in a biobased environment
The houses have been designed with attention to both health and energy performance. Through conscious material and design choices, a comfortable living environment is created:
- biobased insulation materials
- natural ventilation
- optimal daylighting
- energy efficient installations
This is how sustainable living in Delft gets a concrete and high-quality interpretation.
Building a new living culture together
Sint Jorisweg shows how timber construction, biobased materials and climate adaptive design come together in a small-scale project with a high impact.
It is an example of how we can strengthen the city without burdening it, how we can compact it without hardening it. A step towards a healthy, future-proof living environment.
