Innovative transformation and topping suburban growth

In the heart of Groningen, De Kroon is rising, a project that reflects the power of transformation, topping, architecture and renovation. This carefully designed building is a sophisticated addition to the city and shows how existing structures can be expanded sustainably without losing the historical context.

Topping up: smart and sustainable home extension

In times of urban densification and sustainable construction, topping offers an innovative solution. De Kroon adds an extra floor without taking up extra ground space, which contributes to more efficient use of space in the city. The continuous windows create a smooth transition between old and new, ensuring harmonious integration and a visually appealing façade.

Balancing architecture and environment

Where De Skeg is a powerful urban entrance, De Kroon stands out for its sophisticated approach to architecture. The design plays with light, shadow and depth, so that the building constantly changes its appearance during the day. The subtle detailing and rounded volumes ensure a natural interaction with the surrounding buildings, reinforcing the aesthetic and functional value of the project.

Renovation and transformation as a driver for sustainable cities

This transformation by De Kroon proves how architecture and renovation can contribute to a future-proof city. By redeveloping and expanding existing buildings responsibly, we not only add new floors, but also maintain and strengthen the character of Groningen.

With this smart approach, De Kroon becomes a new layer in the city's rich history, and an inspiration for suburban developments elsewhere.

Topping up and transforming Groningen: De Kroon aan de Nieuweweg

Building on what's already there

In Groningen, with De Kroon aan de Nieuweweg, we show how the city can grow without expanding. By topping building and transformation of an existing building we are adding new homes to an existing structure.

Sustainable construction with wood and biobased solutions

Sustainable construction only really gains strength when we opt for biobased construction and smart, circular solutions. That's why we focus on timber construction: from CLT construction Netherlands upto engineered timber buildings NL.

If timber construction architect we design lightweight structures that are suitable for topping and provide minimal load on existing buildings.
