Urbanism - Transformation of Jullensstraat: From Industrial Area to Green Residential Area, Groningen (NL)

Functions: Housing/Parking
Client: VIF17 E.G.
Year: 2020-2024
Gross Floor Space: 20,000 m²
FSI/GIS/OSR: 7.07/0.82/0.03

The former industrial park on the Jullensstraat in Groningen is the making way for a sustainable, future-proof residential area. What was once an obsolete industrial zone is being redeveloped into a vibrant neighborhood with green outdoor spaces and contemporary architecture. This project contributes to the growth and renewal of Groningen and offers a perfect balance between urban living and nature.

Smart and Sustainable Urban Design

The new residential project includes four to five modern residential blocks above a shared underground car park, so that the ground level remains car-free. This increases the quality of life and creates a safe, peaceful living environment. The smart orientation of the buildings ensures optimal light and a strong connection with the green environment.

Green Courtyard and Biodiversity

Thanks to the compact design, there is plenty of space for green areas, including a lush courtyard with trees, perennials and raised plant borders. Mobile tree pots and flowering shrubs increase biodiversity and provide a pleasant living environment. The combination of green roofs, façade vegetation and natural materials reinforces the sustainable character of the neighborhood.

Sustainability and a sense of community

This project focuses on energy-efficient construction techniques and circular materials, which not only contributes to lower CO₂ emissions, but also provides a pleasant living environment. The shared outdoor spaces promote community building and make the neighborhood inviting for residents of all ages.

Urban Climate Architects is realising this transformation, based on the preliminary urban study by MINT Architects. The redevelopment of Jullensstraat is an example of innovative urban regeneration, where sustainability, architecture and quality of life come together in a green, forward-looking residential area.
