The Dance — A Playful Transformation in Downtown Groningen (NL)

Right in the historic heart of Groningen, between Stoeldraaierstraat and Akerstraat, De Dans—a unique residential project that brings movement, light and space together in an innovative way. Where there were once three garage boxes, there are now three sleek, expressive buildings that rise within the narrow city structure.

De Dans transformeert de locatie van drie voormalige garageboxen in drie expressieve woongebouwen die de stedelijke ruimte in Groningen herdefiniëren, met slanke en moderne architectuur.

De Dans is a remarkable example of urban transformation in Groningen. This innovative residential project is rising in the middle of the historic heart of the city, between Stoeldraaierstraat and Akerstraat. On the site where three garage boxes once stood, there are now three sleek, expressive residential buildings that shape movement, light and space in a new way.

Tailored urban transformation

De Dans responds to the increasing demand for inner-city living and shows how transformation on a small scale can have a major impact. By using the existing footprint and by smart densification, space is created for new homes in a compact, historical context. This makes De Dans a sustainable and future-proof example of redevelopment.

Topping up as an opportunity for densification

In a city where space is scarce, toppings a smart and efficient solution. The three buildings of De Dans are carefully raised with extra floors that complement the skyline without disturbing it. The play with height, slanted lines and playful volumes creates an architectural balance between old and new — a subtle form of renovation that does justice to the existing urban structure.

Light, reflection and sustainability as design principles

Light is a precious commodity in the narrow alleys of Groningen. The architecture of De Dans is therefore designed to allow optimal daylight. Large windows provide sight lines through the building and into the city, while reflective façade panels reflect light back into the street. These elements create a dynamic play of light and shadow that transforms the building throughout the day. Green facades and the use of sustainable materials also contribute to a healthy and livable living environment.

Transformation as a catalyst for innovation

De Dans is more than a renovation project — it's an architectural statement about how we can add new layers to the city with limited space. The buildings are smart, almost moving, and adapt to the existing context while challenging and innovating. This urban transformation shows that innovative housing, summits and sustainable design can go hand in hand in a compact city.

Conclusion: a new future for the city

With De Dans, Urban Climate Architects proves that transformation is not just about reusing space, but also about adding quality to the city. By breathing new life into existing structures with smart solutions such as topping and sustainable renovation, a vibrant, contemporary layer is created in the historic city center of Groningen.

De Dans: playful transformation in downtown Groningen

In the city center of Groningen, an existing building gets a new energy. With De Dans, we show how a transformation of an existing building can grow into a vibrant and future-proof place.

By combining sustainable construction, biobased construction and circular construction in the Netherlands, a project is created that strengthens the city without expanding. This is where architecture literally moves and creates space for new stories.

Transformation as an engine for urban renewal

The strength of De Dans lies in reuse. Instead of demolishing, we choose to build on what is already there. As a building transformation architect and renovation architect in the Netherlands, we see existing buildings as valuable raw materials.

Smart transformation creates a new layer in the city where past and future come together.

Circular construction in the Netherlands and central reuse

Circular construction in the Netherlands forms the basis of this project. Materials are being reused and new interventions are well thought out and forward-looking.

Biobased construction and wood construction as an addition

Sustainable construction only really gains strength when we opt for biobased construction and timber construction. In De Dans, we add new elements that are light, efficient and forward-looking.

With CLT bouw Nederland and building solid wood, a warm and healthy quality of living is created. As a timber architect, we create spaces that are not only functional but also feel comfortable.
