Transformation of the Suikerunie site into a Creative Hub — UC Architects

It Groningen City Lab, designed by UC Architects, is a leading example of urban transformation. On the iconic Suikerunie site — once an industrial area — a vibrant creative hub has emerged for urban innovation. This redevelopment brings living, working, recreation and culture together in an innovative way.

A Multifunctional Transformation

The Stadslab consists of three carefully designed spaces that offer maximum flexibility:

  • Two cylindrical sheds or 520 m² each, ideal for exhibitions, cultural programming and events.
  • One central hall of 600 m² that serves as a meeting place and restaurant. This space opens completely to the outside, creating a natural stage for festivals, concerts and city events.

Thanks to this smart layout, the Stadslab can quickly be transformed into a concert stage, workshop space or meeting place — a dynamic setting for the creative city.

UC Architects has focused on adaptability, sustainability and interaction in the design. The result is a space where transformation is literally and figuratively central. The Stadslab encourages encounters and cooperation, and fits seamlessly with Groningen's vision as an incubator for urban renewal.
