Het Raam — Innovative Transformation and Topping by UC Architects in the Heart of Groningen (NL)

A fresh look at urban living

In the center of Groningen is “Het Raam”, an architectural project that shows how summits and housing can contribute to the city in an innovative way. This complex, which extends over two roofs, offers 500 m² of living space that subtly blends into the city, but at the same time offers a whole new perspective on urban life.

Architectural detail of Het Raam’s modern rooftop design, echoing the proportions of a 19th-century window while creating 500 m² of new living space.

Summit and Transformation: Apartments Herestraat 91, 93 — “The Window”

At Herestraat 91 and 93 in Groningen, UC Architects has created an inspiring example of redevelopment: Het Raam. This innovative residential project shows how summits and transformation can contribute to sustainable urban renewal, without sacrificing the historic city center.

Architecture as a catalyst for innovation

Instead of demolishing, UC Architects opted for a smart transformation of the existing roof landscape. With an addition of two buildings, 500 m² of new living space has been added. The design is inspired by an enlarged 19th-century window — a powerful architectural statement that reinforces the relationship between inside and outside.

Renovation with respect for context

This redevelopment combines subtle urban integration with innovative living quality. The “rooms in the window” offer residents a unique view of Groningen, while the design respects and enriches the existing structure. The project shows how housing transformation can contribute to densifying the city center in a sustainable way.

The Window as a symbol of urban innovation

“The Window” is more than just a topping — it's a vision of how innovation and redevelopment can go hand in hand with historic quality. By adding a modern floor without disrupting the cityscape, UC Architects provides a compelling example of how we can build a future-proof city.
